*Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional here to diagnose, treat, cure, or otherwise influence your medical journey outside of the guidance of a medical professional. I am simply sharing my own journey and what I have learned along the way. Please find a doctor you trust and discuss any medical concerns or treatments with them.
Disclaimer above being said, I’ve compiled 6 of our favorite “strategies” for treating new tick bites with a PROACTIVE stance while we get in touch with our provider for further treatment/management. So know that I hope this list blesses and helps you, and also spurs you to further treat ASAP. We all deserve to have the tools we need to maximize our health.
BUT FIRST, before we get into My 6 Proactive Ideas for Treating Tick Bites Naturally, let me quickly preface the conversation with this basic info about where I’m coming from when it comes to tick bites (and please see my previous Blog posts, YouTube channel, and Facebook group for even more info and details!)
~First, remove the tick properly and clean site with non-toxic option. If you are unsure about how to do this, check out THIS BLOG POST I did to help! It doesn’t really matter if it’s engorged, only barely bit the skin, hasn’t been attached long...ANY bite CAN transmit infections. Therefore I would recommend (and reputable LLMD’s recommend) taking seriously and treating ANY bite.
~Second, document ANY site reaction (redness, rash of any kind, etc), and ANY body response/reaction. Listen to your body. Don’t assume something “off” is coincidence. A LLMD will take ALL symptoms or concerns into consideration. My recommendation is to actually write your symptoms on a calendar to accurately keep track of timelines, etc.
~Third, send the tick for testing if possible. Yes, even if smashed/in pieces/etc. One reputable testing site I can suggest is ticknology.org, but always do your own research too! Sending the tick for testing isn’t necessarily conclusive, but can certainly be helpful in how to proceed with treatment. Please note: it is not recommended to delay treatment after a bite while waiting for the results of tick testing!
~Fourth, consider (STRONGLY consider!) professional help from a LLMD (Lyme Literate MD/provider). This would be to at least get antibiotics or appropriate herbals (or both) until blood testing or further evaluation can be done, 4-6wks after bite. I recommend the care of a trusted LLMD or naturopath who is Lyme literate.
NOW for My 6 Proactive Ideas for Treating Tick Bites Naturally:
Buhner’s new bite protocol: essentially this plan involves taking astragalus and utilizing a homemade paste of andrographis tincture & green clay on the bite site. A quick Google search can get you the exact info for what Buhner recommends doing, but we keep these supplements & ingredients on hand to use if needed. Super simple and proactive!
Ledum: this plant has lots of constituents that support health/high antioxidants and certain healing properties. It is longtime known for usage for black eyes, bites, stings, punctures, scrapes, etc. It comes as a homeopathic, essential oil, tea, etc. In out house, we use the homeopathic form as well as the essential oil.
Essential oils: these can be extremely immune system supportive and therapeutic for our cells and cellular function. It’s like harnessing the max power of plants! For us, Frankincense, Thieves, ImmuPower, Raindrop technique, Ledum, herb and spice oils, and citrus oils are all go-tos. Quality is CRUCIAL here if you are looking for safe, and truly therapeutic/healing oils. Our oils can be used multiple ways, so that’s what our household does!
Evaluation of diet: because food is our first source of “medicine.” I evaluate reducing/eliminating sugar and increasing antioxidants and vitamins/minerals, specifically. Some ways we do this at our house: smoothies, whole foods, garlic, oregano, bone broth, NingXia Red, etc.
Foot potatoes: I knowwww it sounds super odd! But it’s shockingly EASY and seemingly effective! So why not try this as a way to start promoting healing and detoxing overnight?! If you haven’t heard of this wacky phenomenon, check out the YouTube vid I did explaining it further!
Supplements to support immune system/health: the bottom line is that even if we eat the BEST possible diet, our food these days is still missing some key nutrition and is probably coming up short in max healing properties. It’s still worth beefing up a healthy diet, BUT it’s probably not a bad idea to also supplement vitamins and minerals known to help boost our immune systems and healing abilities. This should be done with the help of a knowledgeable provider. Everyone has different needs, and so a professional collaborating with you on what might be best for your body is what you’re going for here. Some of what we do in our house, to give you an idea, includes: upping vitamins C & D & taking or increasing selenium, quercetin, NAC and/or glutathione, colloidal silver, & Cistus tea, among other things
If you like these points and want to have them easily on hand and accessible, I’ve also created a printable for you, for FREE! Grab it right here!
