If you've spent any time in the wellness world, you've probably encountered countless detox programs.
Juice cleanses.
Parasite cleanses.
Detox teas.
Seven-day resets.
Thirty-day detox challenges.
Etc.
The message is usually the same: Your body is full of toxins and needs a special program to remove them.
As a nurse, I have a slightly different perspective.
Your body was *designed* to detoxify.
Every single day.
The human body already contains sophisticated detoxification pathways that work around the clock. Your liver processes compounds for elimination. Your kidneys filter waste. Your digestive system removes byproducts. Your lymphatic system helps transport waste products. Your skin and lungs also play supporting roles.
The goal isn't to CREATE detoxification.
The goal is to SUPPORT it.
In today's world, our bodies may be asked to process more than they were designed to handle. Things like:
Environmental exposures.
Chronic stress.
Poor sleep.
Inflammation.
Nutrient deficiencies.
Leaky gut.
These factors can place additional demands on detoxification pathways. For some people, targeted support may be helpful. But more isn't always better.
One of the biggest mistakes I see in this area is people trying to force detoxification before the body has the capacity to handle it. Aggressive protocols can sometimes leave people feeling worse, not better. Why? Because detoxification requires energy. If someone is already running on empty, pushing harder isn't always the answer.
So, start with the basics! These things aren't a fancy protocol, but they are the foundational basics you HAVE to have in place in order to detox.
- Stay hydrated
- Prioritize sleep
- Move your body daily
- Support regular bowel movements
- Manage stress
These simple habits often provide more benefit than expensive detox programs. They support the systems for detox you already have in place!
Overall, I prefer to think about detoxification through the lens of resilience. Can your body efficiently process normal daily demands? Can your detox pathways keep up without becoming overwhelmed? Those are much more useful questions than whether you need another cleanse.
Detoxification is only one piece of the health equation. Energy production, nervous system regulation, immune function, and recovery all influence how resilient we feel. And that's exactly what we'll be discussing in my upcoming webinar, Running on Empty.
